‘Mine is one of the smaller gardens that Julia has designed; it had some old apple trees and some brick and flint walls, and that was about it. She listened carefully to the very basic ideas I had for subdividing the garden, and took them further, producing a design on paper (beautifully laid out and presented) with a structure of evergreens and pleached hornbeams, beds of herbaceous and prairie planting, an orchard area and a formal vegetable garden, all with perfect sight lines and good proportions.
Her planting is simple and stylish, with repetition and blocks of similar plants for maximum effect.
The colour palette Julia chose perfectly suits the New England wood boarding on my house, and the floatiness and movement in the prairie planting are a perfect foil for the more formal basic layout of the garden.
Julia has come up with the perfect garden for this house, which I could never have put together.
It has private corners, pretty views, a small bit of grandeur, and lovely fine detail.
Julia is charming to talk to, very prompt and reliable, and takes personal control of each aspect of the design’s implementation. She worked very well with the team of men responsible for the earth moving and construction works, and was hands on when it came to laying out the planting.’
